The name comes from Nahuatl and means place beside the waters. The first colonist families arrived in 1715, and the area later became known as Perry's Point after a military post was put up there in 1816. In October 1830 the Mexican colonel Juan Davis Bradburn established a customs post on the same bluff and named it Fort Anahuac; the Anahuac Disturbances of 1832 and 1835 helped precipitate the Texas Revolution. The Texas Legislature designated the city the Alligator Capital of Texas in 1989.
