Gutter guards
Gutter guards, without the pitch
Gutter guards are sold harder than almost anything else in home improvement, usually with a lifetime promise and a same-day decision. They are genuinely useful under the canopy a lot of this metro sits under. They are not a maintenance-free guarantee, and the honest version is more useful than the pitch.
The four types, and what each one actually does

What decides whether a guard works on your house
- What is over the roof. Live oaks drop leaves and tassels in spring and drop them continuously in a wind; pines load a gutter with needles all year. A house with no overhanging canopy rarely needs a guard at all.
- How hard it rains. Systems that rely on surface tension are the most sensitive to flow rate, and Gulf Coast rainfall rates are exactly the condition that defeats them. It is the reason the same guard performs differently on two houses on the same street.
- Whether the gutter is right in the first place. A guard on an undersized or badly pitched gutter converts a cleaning problem into an overflow problem.
- How it is attached. Anything fastened by lifting the first course of shingles and sliding a bracket underneath is now part of your roof, and it is a warranty question as well as a leak question.
Be careful with any system installed under the shingles. It puts a fastener or a lever arm into the most wind-sensitive course on the roof — the one at the eave — in a market that records damaging wind constantly and gets tropical systems on top of it.
Things no gutter guard does
- Add capacity
- If water goes over the front in heavy rain, the trough or the outlets are undersized for the rain this region gets. A cover on top does not add capacity, and several types reduce the effective opening.
- Control where the water goes
- A guard does nothing about a downspout discharging at the corner of the slab, which on expansive clay is the part that actually matters.
- Hold a sagging gutter up
- A gutter hanging off soft fascia needs the fascia fixed and the hangers re-set. A guard adds weight to the problem.
- End maintenance
- Every system needs checking. What a good one does is turn a twice-a-year scoop-out into an occasional rinse and an inspection, which is a real improvement and is worth paying for on a two-story house or a steep roof.
How to buy one without being sold one
- Have the gutter assessed first. Size, pitch, hangers, fascia, and where the downspouts discharge. If any of those are wrong, fix them before adding anything on top.
- Ask what happens with live oak tassels and pine needles, specifically, not with the handful of dry leaves in the demonstration.
- Ask what happens in a downpour, because that is the local failure mode for anything that works by surface tension.
- Ask how it attaches, and if the answer involves the shingles, ask what that does to the roof and to any workmanship warranty on it.
- Decline the same-day discount. A price that expires when the salesperson leaves the driveway is a sales tactic, not an offer.

Under live oaks or pines, on a tall or steep house, or where climbing a ladder is not a good idea, a well-chosen system is genuinely worth it. On a single-story house with nothing overhanging the roof, it usually is not.
Will a guard void my roof warranty?
It depends on the system and on the warranty. Anything that lifts shingles or fastens through them is the case to ask about specifically, in writing, before it goes on.
Do guards help with mosquitoes?
Only indirectly, and only if the gutter drains. Standing water in a trough is a breeding site, and the thing that empties a trough is pitch and a clear outlet. A foam or brush insert in a shaded gutter can make that worse rather than better by holding moisture in place.
A company told me their guard is maintenance-free for life. Is that true?
No system is maintenance-free under trees. Read what the promise actually covers: often it is the product, not the performance, and the remedy is a replacement part rather than a clear gutter.
