Residential roofing

Roofing for houses that have to take the sun, the wind and the rain that comes sideways

Eight counties, from inside the Loop out to Katy, The Woodlands and Sugar Land, down through Pearland and Clear Lake to the bay and the coast. The housing stock is overwhelmingly post-1960 and slab-on-grade, and what those roofs have in common is a climate that ages them from above with sun and tests them from the side with wind.

The work

  • 01Roof replacementFull tear-off, deck inspection, and the layers underneath that nobody sees.
  • 02Roof repairFixing the actual defect rather than sealing the symptom.
  • 03Storm damageWind and hail assessment, documented against recorded storm dates.
  • 04Emergency tarpingStopping water getting in tonight, before anything else is decided.
  • 05Metal roofingStanding seam and metal panel, coastal corrosion, and when it genuinely makes sense.
  • 06Low-slope residentialPatio covers, additions and flat sections that shingles cannot cover.
  • 07Roof inspectionA written record of condition, with photographs, before you need one.

What the local record actually says

NOAA logged 256 damaging-wind reports and 148 hail reports across the eight counties this site covers between 2021 and 2026. Wind leads, and hail is not a footnote — the largest stone in the window was 2.75″, recorded 16 March 2024 in Fort Bend County, and again 31 May 2024 in Galveston County. You can check what is on record for your ZIP code against the same NOAA database.

Two things about that record matter more than the totals. The first is timing: 89 percent of the hail reports fall between March and June, and tropical systems arrive after that. A mat bruised in the spring is a mat that gets tested by wind-driven rain in the summer, and it is usually the second event that leaks. The second is what the record leaves out. The extract behind this site carries thunderstorm hail and wind only, so for the days Hurricane Beryl crossed the region in July 2024 it holds not a single row — the worst roofing event in recent memory here is close to invisible in the county totals. The dataset is a record of thunderstorms, not a record of hurricanes.

The worst straight-line wind day in the extract is the derecho of May 2024: 24 separate damaging-wind reports in one day, the strongest measured at 104 miles per hour. That is the kind of day the edge of a roof is built for.

What that changes about how a roof is built

Uplift starts at the perimeter and works inward, so the starter course, the drip edge, the nailing pattern and the fastener count matter more here than the brand printed on the shingle wrapper. Wind-driven rain gets in at the same places from the other direction, which is why self-adhered membrane at the eaves, in the valleys and around every penetration earns its place in a Gulf Coast scope. And because the sun does the long, slow damage, the attic ventilation that keeps the deck from baking is part of the roof rather than an extra.

What the housing stock asks for

Era and areaWhat is usually up thereWhat it needs watching for
1960s and 1970s inner suburbs — Sharpstown, Meyerland, Spring Branch, Pasadena, Deer ParkLow-pitch gable and hip roofs on slab-on-grade ranch houses, often with a flat-roofed patio cover or den additionShingles on slopes that are marginal for them, aged pipe boots, and the transition where the flat section meets the main roof
1980s and 1990s suburbs — Clear Lake, Kingwood, Champions, Missouri City, FriendswoodLarger cut-up roofs with several planes, dormers and a lot of penetrationsValleys carrying a lot of water, boots at the end of their life, and ventilation that was never balanced
2000s master-planned communities — Katy, Cypress, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, PearlandSteep architectural-shingle roofs, wide eaves, and radiant barrier decking on the newer onesEdge and rake detailing, high nailing, and hail bruising that is invisible from the ground
Coastal and bay-facing property — Galveston, League City, Seabrook, La Porte, Texas CityHigher wind loads, salt air, and a windstorm inspection requirement on new workCorrosion of fasteners and flashings, uplift at edges, and the certificate a coastal reroof needs
Historic Galveston stockGenuinely old framing, steep slopes and complicated flashing, much of it repaired repeatedlyFlashing at the many wall-to-roof joints, and repairs that respect what is there

How the work is organized

  1. Look at it properly

A roof is assessed from the roof and from inside the attic, not from the driveway. Photographs of what is actually wrong are worth more than an opinion.

  2. Say what is wrong in plain words

You should be able to repeat the diagnosis to somebody else and have it make sense. If a report is only a list of line items, it is not a diagnosis.

  3. Separate urgent from important

A cracked pipe boot is urgent. A roof with five years left is important. They are different conversations and they should not be bundled into one number.

  4. Do the work

Insured local roofing professionals, permits where the jurisdiction requires them, a windstorm inspection where the address needs one, and the deck inspected once the old material is off.

Not sure whether you are looking at storm damage or wear?

Request a free inspection
Which counties do you cover?

Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Galveston, Brazoria, Chambers, Waller and Austin. There are pages for thirty-two communities inside that, each with the housing stock it actually has and the storm events NOAA has actually recorded near it.

Is an inspection free?

Yes, and it comes with photographs of whatever was found. That is true whether or not the outcome is work.

How do I know if the damage is old?

Storm Check lists the hail and damaging-wind events NOAA recorded near your ZIP code with dates, and the recorded storm dates page sets out the significant days across the whole service area. That will not tell you whether your roof was damaged, but it tells you which dates are worth asking about.

Do I need a licensed roofer in Texas?

Texas does not license roofing contractors at state level, so there is no license number to check. What there is to check is insurance, references, a written scope, and a physical address in this market. The checklist sets out what the state itself tells Texans to verify.

All work is performed by insured local roofing professionals. Texas does not license roofing contractors at state level, so insurance, references and a written scope are what there is to check.
