What NOAA actually recorded here from 2021 onward

Between January 2021 and 2 June 2026, NOAA logged 404 hail and damaging-wind reports across the eight counties this site covers: 148 hail and 256 wind. Wind leads, but not by the margin a northern market shows. Hail here is a first-order peril rather than a footnote, and the two arrive in different parts of the year.

What this page does not contain, and why that matters

Read this section before the tables. The extract behind this page covers two NOAA event types, hail and thunderstorm wind. Hurricanes and tropical storms are catalogued under their own event types and are simply not in it. For the days Hurricane Beryl crossed this region in July 2024, the extract holds not a single row.

That is a limitation of the dataset, not a statement about Beryl. Beryl came ashore near Matagorda early on 8 July 2024 as a category 1 hurricane and crossed Southeast Texas through the day; the National Weather Service recorded measured gusts in the eighties of miles per hour at Houston airport stations, and higher than that on the Brazoria County coast. It was one of the most significant roofing events in this market in years and it appears nowhere in the tables below.

When the two seasons happen

This is the most useful single table on the page, and it is the one that reorganizes how you think about a roofing year here. Hail is a spring peril: 89 percent of the hail reports in this window fall between March and June. Thunderstorm wind peaks with it and then continues. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, which is almost exactly the part of the year the hail record goes quiet.

The practical consequence is a sequence rather than two separate risks. A roof takes hail bruising in March, April or May. The bruising is not a hole and it does not leak, so nothing happens. Then a tropical system arrives in July, August or September and drives rain horizontally across a mat that has already been fractured. The leak dates from the second event and the damage dates from the first, and by then establishing either is harder. Hurricane season roof prep works through what to do about it.

The pattern, county by county

Harris County dominates the count, and that is partly real and partly an artifact: more people means more reports, and a report only exists where somebody was there to make one. A low count in Waller, Austin or Chambers County is not evidence of calmer weather.

Hail of one inch or larger

One inch is the conventional threshold at which hail starts doing real damage to an asphalt shingle mat. There are 133 such reports in this window, and 28 of them are 1.75 inches or larger. The largest stones on record here are 2.75″: 16 March 2024 in Fort Bend County, and 31 May 2024 in Galveston County.

A single storm produces many reports, so this table groups them by day. These are the days with four or more recorded hail reports across the service area — the dates worth checking against your own roof.

The significant wind days

A single squall line produces dozens of separate reports, so wind is listed by day too. These are the days with four or more recorded damaging-wind reports. The strongest on record in this window is 16 May 2024, with 24 reports across the service area and an estimated gust of 104 mph in Harris County — a fast-moving line of storms that crossed the metro and did straight-line wind damage on the scale of a landfalling system.

How to read this honestly

• Each row is a report, logged at a point by a trained spotter, a public report, a broadcast source or an official observer. It is not a damage survey.
• Hail sizes are the largest stone observed at that point. Hail falls in narrow swaths, so a 2.5 inch report four miles away does not mean 2.5 inch hail fell on your house.
• Wind speeds are recorded in knots, and most are estimated gusts rather than measured ones. The conversion to miles per hour is shown for convenience and inherits the estimate.
• Absence of a report does not mean absence of a storm. It means nobody reported one at that point — and in the thinly populated parts of this service area that happens routinely.
• Tropical systems are not here at all. Hurricane and tropical storm wind is catalogued under separate event types that this extract does not include.
• The window starts in January 2021. A roof older than that has seen storms this page does not show you.
