A town that physically relocated itself after a petrochemical emergency, so very little here is as old as the place name suggests.
The housing stock
The first permanent settlers were Henry Griffith and his wife Amelia Barrow, who ran cattle across what is now the whole town. Mont Belvieu sits on a salt dome used to store liquefied petroleum gas, and it holds the largest underground storage facility of its kind in the country. Serious pipeline and plant accidents in 1960, 1964 and 1965 were followed by a 1985 explosion that threatened the dome itself, and residents pressed the petrochemical companies to buy out the homes nearest the plants. The community was rebuilt to the east of its former site; the old location is now largely company offices and the slabs of the old town.
Almost entirely modern: the rebuilt residential core, the subdivisions that followed it, and rural acreage around the edges.
