Roofing in Spring Valley Village

A small incorporated enclave inside Houston where most of the original post-war houses have been replaced by much larger ones, and the roofs changed completely when they were.

The housing stock

An attempt in the mid-1950s to form a single Spring Branch municipality across what are now the Memorial Villages failed. Spring Valley incorporated on its own in 1955, at the second attempt and on a redrawn boundary, after the first vote went against it. Because it incorporated when it did, Houston annexed around it rather than through it. The name was formally changed to Spring Valley Village in 2007, although every postal address still reads Houston.

Modest post-war houses on generous lots, with a high rate of replacement by large two- and three-story houses. The result is a small city where a simple 1950s hip roof and a complicated new one sit next door to each other.

Hail leads wind in this record, which shifts the emphasis onto what the mat under the granules looks like rather than onto what the slope looks like from the driveway. A hail bruise is felt more reliably than it is seen, and a photograph taken from ground level will not show it.

Neither number describes the thing that ages a roof here fastest, which is simply the climate. Ultraviolet load, daily thermal cycling and humid air moving through the attic will take an asphalt roof to the end of its service life without a single recorded storm passing over it, and the south and west slopes get there first.
