The more specific you can be, the more useful the first visit is. Where the stain is, when you first noticed it, whether it only happens in certain weather — all of it narrows things down before anyone gets on a ladder.

What to include

• Where the water shows up, if there is water: which room, which wall, how far from an outside wall or a chimney.
• When it happens. Every rain, only heavy rain, only when the wind is from one direction, or when it has not rained at all. Each of those points at a different cause, and the last one is usually condensation rather than a roof leak.
• Roughly how old the roof is, if you know, and whether it has been repaired before.
• Any storm date you have in mind. Storm Check will tell you what NOAA actually recorded near your ZIP code, which is more reliable than memory.

What we will not do

• Quote a price for work on a roof nobody has been on.
• Ask you to sign a contract or an authorization at the front door.
• Tell you your insurance claim will be approved. Nobody outside your carrier can say that.
• Offer to cover, waive or absorb your deductible.
